Delta, British Columbia

Located south of Richmond, Delta is mainly an agricultural community with a land area of 364 square kilometers. Founded by a Spanish explorer in 1791, and developed by European settlers in 1860, fishing and farming helped the settlement to grow quickly. The isolated community was incorporated in 1879, but it wasn't until the opening of the George Massey Tunnel in 1959 and the rerouting of Highway 99 in 1960 that Delta saw rapid growth. The Delta region is known for its multicultural diversity; 23 percent of the local population are minorities, including First Nations of the Tsawwassen Indian Reserve, Chinese Canadians and other South Asian cultures

Community Resources and Recreation

The mild climate allows for outdoor activities all year round, including eco-tours along the Fraser River and Delta Nature Reserve. Delta is bordered by water on three sides, making it ideal for water activities. Walkers, cyclists, and hikers enjoy the walking trails and beaches, with Centennial Beach a favourite family location. Nature lovers enjoy other activities, including bird watching, swimming, and horseback riding. Arts and culture enthusiasts enjoy touring historic homes and viewing Aboriginal art at the Native Art Gallery. The George Mackie Library is the regional library, and Delta Hospital is the local hospital.

Local Access and Public Transportation

Delta is a major transportation area on the Lower Mainland, and most vehicles that are leaving Vancouver for the U.S. pass through its borders. Delta is linked to Richmond by Highway 99, and linked to Langley, Surrey, and communities to the east by Highway 10. River Road also goes directly through Delta to 62B Street where it becomes Highway 17A. Another major road through Delta is 56th Street. There isn't any rapid transit in Delta but the SkyTrain from Surrey comes within a couple of kilometres. Delta also features the Boundary Bay Airport which is mainly for commercial and private use.

Education: Elementary and Secondary Schools

Nearly 16,000 students attend the 7 secondary schools and 24 elementary schools in the Delta School District. One of the major secondary schools is Delta Secondary, which strives to accommodate different learning styles and rates and respects diversity. The population of Delta was 99,863 in 2011, which was an increase of 3.3 percent from 2006. Delta's population density is 544.4 people per square kilometre. The property tax rate for homeowners is 3.2165 percent of the assessed value, and the annual garbage and recycling charge is $283.
