New Westminster, British Columbia
New Westminster was founded as British Columbia's first capital in 1859 and when the capital was moved in 1866, the city remained popular. Lumber and paper milling activity in the 1880's helped boost the population. Today, it's one of the most charming cities in Canada, in addition to being a major shopping centre. A thriving community, many of the city's residents enjoy collaborating with one another to make constant improvements to the city.
Things to Do
New Westminster has some beautiful parks that provide plenty of recreational opportunities, including Queen's Park, Friendship Gardens and the Westminster Pier Park. Centennial Community Centre and Queensborough Community Centre provide an array of activities and classes ranging from child-minding to dance classes for seniors. Those who are fans of the humanities will enjoy the bevy of history and culture contained in the New Westminster Museum & Archives. Part of this includes Irving House, one of the city's oldest homes. Be sure to drop by the New Westminster Public Library, where special events frequently take place. Residents can enjoy access to some of Canada's best health care. Royal Columbian Hospital, administered by Fraser Health, serves the health needs of residents. The city's leadership is committed to keeping their residents healthy.
Getting Around
Both Highway 1 and Highway 91 offer easy access to the city. The city is easy to get around with or without a car, with numerous walking and biking trails. Reliable bus service is provided by TransLink and SkyTrain service is available at five stations around the city.
About the Schools
New Westminster is a great place to raise children, and a huge factor in this is the local school system. A total of nine elementary schools, coupled with two middle schools and the city's secondary school ensure that kids have access to a good education. French immersion programs help students master using both of our national languages with true proficiency. Children can also attend Urban Academy, a private school for all grade levels with options for gifted students.
What About Taxes?
Most residents pay a residential tax mill rate of 6.1025, with grants being available for qualified homeowners that decrease some of the costs. The utility rate for 2014 is 48.4879. A provincial school tax credit is available.
Fun Events to Look Forward To
New Westminster is a great place to call home if you enjoy festivals and events. One of the annual events that has become a tradition is the Annual Key West Ford Show and Shine in July. It's not only a car show, but also a major entertainment event. Each August, you'll have the opportunity to experience the New Westminster Cultural Crawl. In recent years, this has become one of the premier events for experiencing the work of local artisans. It's also a major homage to the area's unique cultural heritage. In September, the RiverFest combines a community-wide cleanup of the river area with a festival for the whole family. Enjoy a boat parade, a salmon chowder cook-off and river tours. There is plenty of local art to see.
