Port Moody, British Columbia

Port Moody is a scenic city in the metro Vancouver B.C. area. It was officially incorporated in 1913, but has existed since the mid-19th century. It is named after Richard Clement Moody, a former governor of the Falkland Islands. It is known for its diverse wildlife, stunning beauty, and quiet elegance.

Parks and Recreation

Port Moody has a variety of parks that are renowned for their beauty. Four off-leash dog parks are available for dogs to run free and explore. There is a spray park that kids will love, perfect for keeping cool during the warm summer months. People who love hiking will find plenty of trails to explore – but be sure to watch for wildlife in the area, including deer, bobcats, wolverines, and black bears. Part of the vast Trans-Canada Trail is located in Port Moody. The area also features the Alfred Howe Greenway. It is over two kilometers in length and features an elevation climb of approximately 30 metres. There are plenty of bike trails as well. The Trans-Canada Trail and the Shoreline Bike Trail are both popular choices. For sports fans, Port Moody has its own Pacific Junior Hockey League hockey team – the Panthers – established in 1999.

Education

Port Moody is part of School District 43. It features a total of ten schools. Two are high schools, one is a middle school, and the rest are elementary schools.

Demographics

Port Moody's demographics distinguish it from many other cities in its region. The majority of the population is Caucasian, but there is also a substantial Korean and South Asian population, as well as a small number of First Nations. The most recent census counted the population as just under 33,000. The median yearly income was approximately $35,000 per family. Port Moody's property tax rates vary depending on the type of class. Residential class 1 is currently at 1.7796 per $1,000 in assessed value.

Transportation

Like every part of the Metro Vancouver area, Port Moody is serviced by a substantial public transportation system. A plethora of bus routes are available. The city is working on projects to make its transportation system even more convenient and environmentally friendly.
